Ear Wax Removal

Your Guide to Microsuction Ear Wax Removal

Ear wax is AMAZING!

Your ears are amazing! Ear wax is designed to protect your eardrums from dust, debris and dirt which could lead to infection.

Normally the wax will just fall out on its own, however, sometimes, it can harden or get pushed deeper into your ear canal. When this happens, it is best to contact a professional to get this sorted safely and quickly.

Microsuction ear wax removal has been available for some time now, although it has increased in use and popularity in recent years as patients prefer the experience and with advancements in technology, more medical professionals are able to become certified in this type of treatment.

What are the most common reasons for ear wax build up?

Most of the time, ear wax build up is just the result of a natural excess in wax production. Sometimes however it can be for other reasons such as:

  • Using cotton buds: This is an ineffective way of cleaning your ears and can push wax deep inside your ear canal
  • Inserting other objects into your ear: To scratch that itch, or you simple didn’t have anything else to try and clean it with
  • Frequently wearing in-ear headphones: Yes, that’s right! Your Apple Air Pods could be adding to your ear wax woes!
  • Wearing a hearing aid: Although designed to improve hearing, these can cause an excess of wax to build up as it is prevented from falling out

Do I need ear wax removal?

A trained and qualified medical professional is best placed to advise on your treatment options, but common symptoms which could indicate an excess of ear wax are:

  • Mild ear ache
  • Tinnitus / Ringing in your ear
  • Feeling of clogged or full ears
  • Dizziness
  • Reduction in your hearing capacity

If you have any of these symptoms, please contact us for an initial telephone consultation before attempting any home remedies. It is just as important to identify the cause of your symptoms before you self-administering treatment.

Can my GP remove my ear wax?

In the second half of 2020 it was confirmed by the government that ear wax removal was no longer to be offered as a core service on the NHS.

This means that you may not be able to have this done at your local surgery – even if you used to before.

Our service is an alternative, cost-effective, private service.

How often should I have my ear wax removed?

The majority of people only have this treatment done when their ears are blocked.

However, if you are prone to ear wax build-up, it is perfectly OK to have this procedure regularly too. By having the treatment completed on a regular basis it allows for you and your medical professional to keep on top of the cleaning and prevent any future blockages.

This will all be discussed with you further during your first, in-person, appointment.
